Australia Melbourne

What do you mean by Time Zone? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is, ” a geographic region within which the same standard time is used.” Today, we are here to discuss Australia Melbourne time!

Wikipedia says, “A time zone is an area that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial and social purposes.” We have a total of 24 time zones in the world. As the Earth rotates 360° every 24 hours, one-time zone will have 15° longitude. We can make a simple calculation to understand this(360÷24=15).

Now we all have read about The Prime Meridian or Greenwich Meridian. It defines the centre of the first time zone in the world. We have got a clear idea about the time zone after reading the two definitions.

So why are times different in different places on the Earth? We will let you know.

In this blog, we will talk about the Australia Melbourne time, and the USA time zones. If you are interested in the working of time and want to know more about it, follow this piece.

Time Zone in Australia Melbourne (Eastern)

Australia has three time zones- Australian Western Standard time, Australian Central standard time and Australian Eastern standard time. We have studied in our younger days that Australian colonies had adopted Standard time in the 1890s. However earlier, each town or city was free to choose its own local time, called local Mean Time.

We know that the Australian Eastern Standard time is the easternmost time zone in Australia. Furthermore, we read that it is used in the states of New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland and the Australian Capital. In addition, AEST also shares a border with Australian Central Standard Time in the West.

The U.S. Eastern Standard time

Eastern Standard time is the easternmost time zone in the USA. We know that it stretches in all or some parts of the 23 States and three provinces in Canada. Besides, we can also say that countries like Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America also follow this time zone.  Furthermore, we can assume that more than half of the population of the USA resides in the EST. Right from Northern Canada to Panama around the equator.

In addition, North American Standard timeshares a border with Atlantic Standard time(AST) and Central Standard Time(CST).

Time difference between Melbourne and the US eastern time zone

In the year 2016, we have all watched the  Australian Open taking place in Melbourne just like in other years. This however is the custom we have witnessed happening since the year 1972.

But do you know what time it is in Australia Melbourne? The place is in the AEDT, thus making it run faster by 16 hours ahead of the US Eastern time zone. In addition, we can also calculate that it is 19 hours ahead of the US Pacific time zone at the time of the tournament. Now this means our calculations come down to – Melbourne time at 11 hours faster running to Coordinated Universal Time. We can also shorten it to UTC+ 11h.

The first day of the Australian Open is scheduled for Monday, January 18th in local Australia Melbourne time. We will be able to watch the first scheduled single matches from 11 am AEDT. Furthermore, we can watch it on Sunday, January 17th at 7 pm in the United States Eastern Time.
