Graham Crackers

An American Presbyterian minister, Reverend Sylvester Graham invented this cracker. At that time, people are much harsher with sex and alcohol. To reduce the urge for sexual sense, Graham invented this cracker.

What Did Graham Believe In Having Whole Grains?

In the 1830s, Graham created a revolution among people to avoid eating meat and sugar. This is to balance their diet and thus, he became the inspiration for developing veganism in America.

He also criticized some of the things such as

  • Tobacco
  • Seasoning
  • Alcohol
  • Butter
  • Refined Flour

Additionally, he wanted to avoid the consumption of coffee and tea too. According to him, they are also drugs for him, as they cause a ‘demand for stimulation.’ Another worst thing that he hates was overeating. Thus, he wanted people to follow a strict vegetarian diet.

The main reason behind inventing crackers is to stop then-people from having many sexual desires. According to Graham, eating meat and fat will increase sexual desire. Additionally, sexual desire and lust were causing issues like

  • Epilepsy
  • Spinal diseases
  • Early Death of Offspring

So, many people believed his views and followed him at that time.

Theory Of Graham:

Thus, the theory of Graham is that the eating habits of people are the main reason for their behaviors. According to him, some non-vegetarian foods are overstimulating. Such foods will cause impure thoughts and feelings. In his language, it was ‘Self-Pollution.’ So, Graham’s views affected many other products at that time.

Then, after the death of Graham, John Harvey Kellogg invented the Victorian-era cornflake. He followed the beliefs of his ancestor, Graham, and introduced this product. This product was full of cereals and nuts. Kellogg was one of their followers of Graham.

What Did Graham’s Followers Eat At That Time?

The main food item that was coming under Graham’s diet is bread. Such bread mainly uses coarsely ground wheat or rye. This same flour is used in making Graham crackers and muffins too.

But soon after the death of Graham, his food system was active for a few years. After that, some other person came who changed this vegetarian diet into a non-vegetarian diet.

In the 1880s, a company named National Biscuit Company manufactured graham crackers. But they manufactured it differently as they added some of their least favorite things of Graham. They are

  • White Flour
  • Sugar
