What Are Mechanical Water Flow Meters And Their Types

Mechanical Water Flow Meters

A lot of industrial factories use the help of water flow meters to measure water. If you want to gauge the amount of water that flows or passes through a pipe, then you can use the means of a water flow meter. Water flow meters are depending on their usage. So, if you want to know more about the water flow meters, then give this article a read.

Types Of Water Flow Meters

So, we know that there are different types of water flow meters depending on the measurement, application, maintenance requirement, and budget. Moreover, each of them is also unique in its way. They are as follows:

  • Mechanical Flow Meters
  • Vortex Flow Meters
  • Ultrasonic Flow Meters
  • Magnetic Flow Meters

Mechanical Water Flow Meter

This is perhaps the most common type of water flow meter, which can measure the flow through turbine rotation. Moreover, these flow meters can measure the speed of flowing water running through a pipe.

A mechanical water meter has a few types of its own as well. So, here are some of the most common of them.

Positive Displacement Flow Meter

This flow meter can measure the flow rate of water by measuring the volume of the water that passes through them. Therefore, these flow meters can measure the meager or intermittent flow rates of waters. In addition, it’s also suitable for any liquid, irrespective of density and viscosity.

Mass Flow Meter

Next, we have the Mass flow meter, which measures the mass of the substance that flows through them and therefore provides an estimate of the flow rate to the users. People generally employ this type of flow meter in the chemical industries because the weight-based measurement is essential compared to volumetric analysis.

Furthermore, mass flow meters also have their categories, i.e., Thermal Meters, Coriolis flow meters. So, in the case of thermal meters, the fluid flow can cool the probe, which we preheat to a certain degree. Moreover, we can also sense the heat loss and determine the rate at which the fluid will be flowing.

On the other hand, a Coriolis meter works under the basic Coriolis principle, in which the water or fluid flows through the vibrating tube. In turn, it will cause a change in the frequency or phase shift, through which we can determine the flow rate.

Differential Pressure Flow Meter

This is the next type of mechanical flow meter that can measure the fluid. This meter works by blocking the flow of fluid within a pipe and creates a disparity in the static pressure among the up and downstream parts of the machine. Thereafter, you can measure the differential pressure to get the flow rate.

Velocity Flow Meter

Next, we have this flow meter, which the industrial workers use to measure the velocity of the stream and therefore analyses the volumetric rate of liquid flow. It’s worth mentioning that these meters are a lot less sensitive when the internal movement of liquid is higher.

Final Thoughts:

So these were some of the most important types of mechanical water flow meters. If you are deciding to get one for your company, then these would be pretty handy.
