She has pushed the envelope as a female rapper for the past 25 years. Moreover, setting records and making history along the way. However, she is frequently credited with bringing sex positivity to the forefront of hip-hop. Paving the way for today’s artists such as Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Kash Doll. Also, she has a large fan base due to her stunning, flamboyant fashion sense.

She has been an inspiration to many, but she has also disappointed them. On March 17, 2005, the rapper, real name Kimberly Jones, was found guilty. She was guilty of  three counts of conspiracy and one count of perjury. She lied to a federal grand jury in 2001, claiming she hadn’t seen her friends at the scene of a shooting, but video surveillance footage proved otherwise. Since the beginning of her career, Lil’ Kim has faced criticism and judgement about her appearance. She fractured her nose in a fight with an ex-boyfriend in 2005, which she discussed on a radio show. Kim told the audience about her experience in a violent relationship. She told that left her with a “broken nose, black eyes, and all that stuff.”

According to the New Yorker, she had to “fix her nose” twice because each time she returned to her boyfriend after surgery, he beat her again, sending her into a spiral of depression and self-loathing. The vicious assaults left her with more than just facial injuries. “He beat me up so bad I couldn’t even move,” Kim said, prompting a series of MRIs. Another issue was blood clots in her back.

Kim had had enough of pretending her bruises were “an allergic reaction” and concealing them with makeup, so she decided to pay someone to remove them for good.

Because of her experience, she founded Lil’ Kim Cares to combat issues such as poverty, child abuse, and domestic violence. She also wants to demonstrate that, despite her celebrity, she faces the same difficulties as anyone else who has been abused. She, like all survivors, must summon tremendous strength to escape a destructive environment and rediscover the love for herself.

The single mother admitted she didn’t think she was “good enough” to succeed as a “normal black girl”. Her father’s verbal humiliation also contributed to her feelings of self-doubt and shame about her romantic history. “Men, like my father, have always put me down,” she explained.
