With the advent and development of the internet and digital tools, accessing information has become simple and easier than ever. All you have to do is go online and enter in a few details and that’s that! You’ll likely have all the information you need with the click of a few buttons.

This is the case with insurance as well. You can now purchase, renew and even check your vehicle insurance status online

While purchasing and renewing insurance online is pretty common, many of us are still unaware of the fact that we can check the status of our insurance online.

Firstly, let’s understand why you might want to check your vehicle insurance online. Here are two common reasons for checking you insurance status:

To stay on top of your insurance plan

Keeping tabs on your insurance plans can help ensure that you’re protected at all times. It’s good practice to check the status of your insurance online often to be well-acquainted with its expiry and renewal dates.

To check the accident history of your vehicle

In case your vehicle has been in an accident that’s caused damages and loss, then it’s likely that you’ve raised a claim. You can look through your claim history or other related information while checking your insurance plan’s status.

So, now you may be wondering, where can I check my insurance status? You can check your vehicle insurance status on the IIB website. IIB is a data depository and data analytics body that supports the Insurance Regulator in India, IRDAI.

Here’s a simple set of steps you can follow to check your insurance status online through the IIB website:

  • The first step is to get all your documents in order. In case you’re looking for information related to an accident, make sure to keep all details relating to the accident handy as well.
  • Now, log in to the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) website.
  • Fill in the required information.
  • You will now be able to view details relating to your vehicle insurance.

Here are some points worth keeping in mind while checking your insurance status online:

  • Ensure that there is no space between the case when you’re entering in your vehicle’s registration number.
  • It can take up to two months for information to reflect on the IIB database. So, if you’re unable to view something, it helps to be patient and check back later.
  • In case you’re looking for insurance details relating to a new vehicle, you’ll require additional information to access insurance details. You’ll need to enter in your chassis number and engine number.
  • You may make up to three attempts to check your insurance details on the IIB website.
  • In case you’re not able to view information on the IIB website, consider visiting your RTO.

In case you’re not able to access the IIB website, you can check your vehicle insurance by going on the Vahan e-services portal. Vahan is a nation-wide vehicle registry portal launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Here’s how you can check your vehicle insurance status online on the Vahan portal:

  • Go on the Vahan e-services portal.
  • Navigate to the ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’
  • Enter in your vehicle registration number
  • Click on ‘Vahan Search’
  • You should now be able to see all information relating to your vehicle

In case you’re unable to access any of these platforms, or if you’d rather prefer to get your information offline, then fret not! You can check your vehicle insurance status offline as well. Just visit your RTO, submit your vehicle registration number and that’s it! You can now collect information regarding your vehicle from your RTO.

A motor insurance plan is crucial to keep you protected against any unprecedented damages or losses. More importantly, all motor vehicles in India must be insured against third-party liability as per Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This makes insurance products an essential product. So, it’s imperative that policyholders are well aware of their policy plans. In an effort to simplify insurance, IRDAI has made checking insurance status easier than ever. There now exist multiple avenues to check your vehicle insurance status online, such as IIB and Vahan.
