He said, “I have not heard anything about a Season 9…I mean, like, what would happen? Stefan and Damon…Damon has, like gray hair, and they have canes? Listen, it ran a great course and now it’s still living. That’s what’s so amazing. It’s still living.”

So, if we base our judgments on this, it appears that Ian feels that the show has ended on a good note. In other words, he is not looking that hopeful to reprise his role as Damon. 

Truth About The Cancellation Of The Show In 2017

Julie Plec, the showrunner of Vampire Diaries has also praised a lot about the whole show. In fact, she added that the greatest honor one can have as a storyteller is to make sound and mutual decisions with peers. She’s really happy that she was able to make those decisions. Therefore, she felt that the eighth season was the right time to sign off the show. 

“Season 8 is going to be the final season. It’s bittersweet and emotional and we’re going to cry about this in a few minutes.”

Julie also thanked the fans of Vampire Diaries for sticking up for the show. She thanked them from the bottom of her heart for being part of the beautiful run that the show had. 

So, we can safely say that it wasn’t due to any flabbergasting scandal or dramatic scenario that the show canceled. In other words, the show ran its course and the storytellers told the story that they wanted to.
