A DIY Guide Guide to Self-Publishing

It was a long and grueling process but the novel you’ve been working on is done at last. You want to get it published but you’re not sure what avenue you want to go down.

Why not get it self-published? Self-publishing gives you more freedom of control over your content and design. With all the control comes great responsibility, however. There is a right and wrong way to go about the process.

Self-publishing means self-marketing for example. If you don’t get the word out, nobody will know you published a book.

Check out this guide to self-publishing for a few more tips on how to get started.

Have Your Book Edited

One of the biggest mistakes new authors make is not using a professional editor as a second pair of eyes. If you publish your book with a hundred grammar errors nobody will be able to get past page one.

Editors are also there to make sure your content is readable. Suffice to say, hiring an editor is one of the most important steps to self-publishing.

Your Book Cover Design

When people are looking for a new book to read they absolutely judge a book by its cover. If it looks professional enough nobody will be able to tell that your novel wasn’t published by a major company.

If you don’t have any experience with making book covers, it might be a good idea for you to turn to a professional for this job as well.

Buy an ISBN

If you’re self-publishing with the intention of your novel physically being on a shelf, your work will need a 13-digit ISBN. It will allow people to look up information on your publications. You can get a free one but it’s better to buy one.

You can grab one by going through your self-publishing platform or by seeking out another regionally-accepted source.

Find a Distributor

You’re going to need to find a distributor who will get your book out there. You can find one that will physically print your book or you can go the online route.

We will say that the online route is the more popular option. Look out for scams. There are some distributors who will make it seem like they’re cutting you a deal only to do nothing with your work.

Market Your Book

Unfortunately, when you publish your own book, you’ve got to do your own marketing as well. Promote your novel on social media, set up automated email lists, go through online advertising, and offer a price promotion.

Your Guide to Self-Publishing Your Masterpiece

Have you finished your novel and are ready to get it out there to the world? Self-publishing is one of the easiest ways to do it. This being said, there are still a lot of steps involved.

If you use this guide to self-publishing, you should be ready to get your masterpiece out to your adoring public in no time though.
