Mobile phones are an important part of many of our lives, especially right now.  It’s hard to do much of anything in the modern world without them.  In fact, you’re highly likely to find that most jobs require having them, amongst many other facets of our everyday lives.

It only makes sense, then, that we’d want to find ways to save money on our mobile phone plans.  While having cellular service and data is important, it shouldn’t have to be something that we spend a fortune on each month.  That’s why it’s critical to consider all of the available options before making a decision.

Today, we’re here to help you explore some of the various options available, how to compare them, and how to ultimately decide which plan you want to go with.  It can get somewhat complicated, but hopefully this guide will help you.

Mobile PlansWhat are Mobile Plans?

Of course, the first thing for us to do is examine what mobile plans are.  Let’s start with the basics here, before we delve into anything more specific.  Mobile plans are also known as cellphone plans or wireless plans in many contexts, so you may hear them referred to that way.

Typically, they are subscription-based services provided by mobile network operators (MNOs) or telecommunications companies.  They allow users to access voice, text messaging, and data services on their mobile devices, usually phones but also tablets or any similar devices.  You can see some examples here: mobilabonnement.com/ if you’re curious.

What else is there to keep in mind?  Well, mobile plans usually offer a variety of options and features, depending on the specific provider and plan chosen.  This is where the comparisons will really come into play, but we’ll discuss that further on.  For now, let’s look at what some of those options are.

Some examples are as follows:various data allowances, voice minutes, text messaging allowances, international calling or roaming options, device upgrades, and additional services such as mobile hotspot tethering and content streaming. Of course, if you aren’t familiar with these types of devices, a lot of that may not mean much to you.  We’ll cover it further in the next section.

There are a few other things we’d like to note as far as choosing one of these plans goes.  Customers will usually choose a mobile plan that suits their needs and budget.  When they do that, they pay a monthly fee, or they prepay for a certain length of time.  The latter isn’t as popular these days, but it may still be possible for you depending on your provider.

Additionally, the plans may come in different forms.  This could take a few forms, such as individual plans for a single user, family plans for multiple users within a household, or business plans for organizations requiring multiple lines.

Overall, mobile plans can vary significantly in terms of pricing, coverage, data speeds, and available features.  You can start to see why it’s important for consumers to carefully compare different plans and consider their usage patterns before selecting the one that best meets their needs.

Facets to Compare

As you consider the various mobile plans that are out there, it’s a pretty big deal to know what you should be comparing in specific.  We mentioned some of these facets above, but now it’s time to take a deep dive into the main parts of a mobile plan.

Voice Minutes

Obviously, one of the biggest things to think about is this: voice minutes.  Voice minutes are a counter for how long you can speak to folks on your cell phone while making cellular calls.  If you’ve had a phone for a while, chances are you remember the days where this was the most important part of selecting a plan.

Thankfully, these days, a lot of providers offer plans that provide customers with unlimited minutes.  If that’s not the case, though, then you’ll want to consider how much you plan to call people.  A lot of interactions on our phones do tend to be through text messages or other applications, but sometimes calls are important – you’ll have to decide for yourself how much importance you place on voice minutes.

Text Minutes

These are similar to the former category, but they apply to SMS (short message service) rather than voice calls.  A provider will essentially provide a certain number of text messages included in your monthly plan, and if you send more than that, you could end up with further fees.

With that said, texting is very prevalent in our current culture.  For this reason, most providers will offer unlimited text plans.  If they don’t, try to get a plan that offers a lot of messages in a month if that’s within your budget.

Text MinutesInternational Calling

This is another entry that is fairly self-explanatory.  If you aren’t someone who uses international calls very often, then this may not be something to worry about.  However, if you frequently talk to friends, family, or even co-workers who live internationally, then it may not hurt to invest in a mobile plan that includes a lot of minutes for these sorts of calls.

Data Coverage and Speed

There are two primary ways in which we can get internet access on our mobile devices.  Most of the time, we’ll hopefully be connected to a Wi-Fi network.  When we can’t, though, then our phones will connect to mobile data (if we have coverage for that in our plan).

In case you aren’t familiar, cellular data refers to the internet connectivity that is provided through a cellular network, typically used on mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, or mobile hotspots. It allows users to access the internet, browse websites, use applications, send and receive emails, stream videos, and utilize other online services while not connected to a Wi-Fi network.

As far as coverage is concerned, you might be surprised by how important this is.  You see, here in Norway, most of the cellular companies utilize the same cell “towers” to provide their customers with data.  It’s a good idea to be familiar with where some of these towers are located, because the general proximity to them can help us gauge where we’ll have stronger service.

The bulk of towers here are in the south because that’s where a majority of people live.  However, there are still towers up north – just make sure you ask your provider how close the nearest one is to you and see if you can get a better deal if you aren’t totally satisfied with your service at the moment.

Choosing a Plan

As you can see, there are a lot of different metrics we can use to compare the various mobile plans.  Consider reading customer reviews to see if they can provide any additional insights, and don’t forget that you can ask friends and family members about it as well!

You can also think about which of the above services or facets you consider more important in a mobile plan.  When you’re browsing the various options, you can use that as a metric for comparison, alongside pricing and the overall deal that you’re getting.  Ask your provider about other options if you aren’t sure what you want.
