The Common Types of Commercial Fencing Explained

You’re hoping to install a fence around your commercial property. But, to this point, you’re not sure which material to use. So, you’re wondering: what are the different types of commercial fencing?

There are many different types of commercial fencing materials, each of which provides its own set of benefits and drawbacks. We’ll discuss the most prominent of these materials below.

Steel

Steel fencing is some of the strongest in existence. Not only can it withstand tremendous physical trauma but the effects of moisture and sunlight as well. As a result, it can last for over 100 years.

This material is ideally used for security purposes, as it’s both difficult to climb and difficult to break into. Though it can work for privacy purposes, it needs to be equipped with privacy slats in order to so.

Aesthetically speaking, steel fencing is sleek and regal. It will instantly enhance the look of a property, providing it with an air of prestige or luxury.

The downside to steel fencing? It’s expensive, one of the most expensive fencing materials on the market.

Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is similar to steel but differs in a number of ways as well. Like steel, it’s exceedingly durable, capable of lasting for over 100 years. However, unlike steel, it requires a fair amount of maintenance.

Not only must wrought iron fencing be cleaned on a regular basis but it must also be painted and de-rusted regularly as well. This maintenance can be both time-consuming and expensive.

Where wrought iron really shines is in its aesthetic. It has a classic, Victorian feel to it and can transform the look of the property it surrounds. Though it can be painted any color, it’s typically painted black.

Wrought iron is a solid security fence but it doesn’t fare well for privacy purposes. This is because it’s got large gaps between each of its bars.

Chain Link

Chain link is the cheapest of all commercial fencing options, making it one of the most popular fencing materials in existence. As such, you’ll commonly see it used around factories, warehouses, prisons, athletic facilities, and the like.

It’s best used for its security purposes. It’s very difficult to break through and, while it can be climbed, it can also be equipped with barbed wire, optimizing its overall security capabilities.

As is, chain link isn’t a great privacy material. Note, though, that it can be equipped with slats, allowing it to block off most visibility if needed.

In terms of aesthetics, chain link isn’t much to write home about. That said, it won’t do anything to detract from the look of your property either.

Composite

Composite fencing is a durable and low-maintenance material that can last for up to 70 years. It’s great not only for security purposes but for privacy purposes as well. Not to mention, it looks great.

You can find composite fencing in a variety of different styles. It can be made to look like stone or wood or a number of other materials. It’s available in a number of colors as well, allowing you to match it with your building.

Now, it can be a little expensive. But when you consider its durability and its low-maintenance capabilities, you’ll see that it really offers quite a bit of bang for its buck.

Vinyl

Vinyl is similar to composite but not quite as durable. It excels against water and sunlight, as well as general physical trauma, and rarely ever requires maintenance. Note, though, that it generally only lasts between 40 and 50 years as opposed to 70.

Like composite, vinyl is great for both security and privacy purposes. Also like composite, it’s available in a variety of colors and styles and can mimic the look of wood and stone.

The best thing about vinyl fencing is its cost. It’s quite a bit cheaper than composite and offers excellent value on a budget. All in all, a commercial vinyl fence is a great option.

Wood

Another material you should consider is wood. Wood is the natural material. It offers a warm and inviting aesthetic, and will provide a commercial property with a welcoming atmosphere.

Wood fences can be painted, and so can take on a variety of different colors. Regardless of the aesthetic that you’re hoping to achieve, you can achieve it with wood.

Functionally speaking, it’s a terrific security fence. It’s difficult to break through and is almost impossible to climb. It offers terrific privacy capabilities as well, serving as an opaque blockade between the inside and outside of the property.

The big downside of wood fencing is that it requires a lot of maintenance. Not only does it need to be cleaned but sealed and painted regularly as well. This can make it both expensive and time-consuming to maintain.

But, at the end of the day, there is no other material like wood. Yes, there are materials that mimic it, but only wood itself has the look and feel of, well, wood.

Stone

Stone fences are fairly unique among fences. They can be built primitively or with highly effective technologies. Aesthetically unique, they will undoubtedly enhance the look of their respective properties.

Stone fences provide excellent privacy and security. They’re almost impossible to break through and almost impossible to climb.

Their one big drawback is their price: stone fencing is exceedingly expensive. Note, though, that it lasts for hundreds of years, providing tons of bang for its buck.
