Although trees can add beauty to your landscape, sometimes there are notable signs that a tree may not be so well. It’s important to look for these signs that may allude to your tree’s deteriorating health.

  1. Canopy Health

If the tree’s canopy is not consistent with the weather, this could be your first warning sign. Imagine a fully grown tree standing in the middle of the summer. The surrounding trees may be green with healthy leaves.

Instead of naturally dropping to the ground, these leaves may cling to the tree. These trees may have leaves that usually fall through winter. But, these leaves may remain well into the postseason.

If there are certain types of fungus or insects dwelling in the tree, this could show signs of fatality. Bark beetles and carpenter ants will often make homes in these trees, as they are weakened. A buildup of water at the base of the tree due to outside circumstances can be detrimental to a tree’s health. Root flares are normal to see at the base of a tree. But, if you have any kind of large cavities forming at the base of the tree, this may be concerning.

Check if there are roots that are being physically lifted from the ground. This does not include a root growing from the surface. This involves roots that are fully exposed, as the tree may be tipping over.

If you have large mushrooms forming at the base of the tree, this can also be a sign of deterioration. Mushrooms could indicate decay which can cause root loss. This can make your tree less stable.

If there are any construction stations in the area, this could add to the damage. These construction sites may include trenches dug around a tree or holes nearby. These sites disrupt the tree’s growth patterns and cause it to destabilize.
