Following the parent novel by Louis Bayard, the movie centres around Augustus Landor. Landor is a detective from New York living all on his own in the woods. He undertakes the investigation of the murder case of Leroy Fry, a cadet of the US Military Academy. The death of Leroy is really pathetic, with his heart being cut out and his body being hanged. Landor takes Edgar Alan Poe, a young cadet, in his team to investigate the case and the two develop a sweet chemistry on-screen.

As a backdrop, we come to know that Landor has a troubled memory of his daughter, who had run off from the house. Now, Poe reminds him of his lost daughter. On the otherhand, Poe has lost his mother. So, a kind of father-son bonding takes place between the two. This relationship is a very essential part of the movie and Melling does well with the character of Poe. In his speech and mannerism, he even outshines the charismatic Bell.

As far as the narrative structure of the movie is concerned, the movie shows standard development. With a hidden note, a murder and an encrypted diary, we find all the triggering elements of a detective movie. However, Scott Cooper seems to understand a simple truth in handling the familiar materials of a detective story: it is all about confidence. Therefore, the exposition of the film is aptly delivered with full mastery. Inclusion of the comic touch here and there does well to balance the mood of the entire film.

In addition, the crimes and murders that the movie shows are gruesome and dangerous enough to excite our imagination. Here too, Cooper plays it Smart. Another important aspect of the movie is the finale. The director made special attempts to make the end as dramatic and unexpected as possible. The clever development of the entire narrative makes the end even more attractive.

Concluding Remarks

In all, The Pale Blue Eye has all the ingredients to be a hit detective movie. The settings used in the film are deeply moving. In addition, the special care taken to show the various relationships also worked like magic. However, it cannot be ignored that there are some flaws in some casting areas, the overall appeal of the film does well to cover up those gaps.
