Work in the Film Industry

Dow has made a few film appearances in addition to his television work. He reprised his role as Wally Cleaver in 1977’s sketch comedy film The Kentucky Fried Movie for a hilarious parody of a legal trial. Dow later appeared as herself in the 1987 parody comedy “Back to the Beach,” alongside Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. The actor didn’t appear on screen again until 2003 when he played himself in the David Spade comedy “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.” 

The film also stars Corey Feldman, Emmanuel Lewis, Carol Marlow and Danny Bonaduce as grown-up versions of themselves playing satirical roles based on their time as child actors. Dow has dabbled in a variety of fields outside of television and film throughout his career. He studied journalism and worked as a journalist while also acting in the 1970s. Later in life, he became interested in sculpture and is now well-known for his abstract bronze works. One of his nine bronzes, produced using the lost-wax method, is owned by his “Leave It to Beaver” co-star Barbara Billingsley. Dow was one of three sculptors whose work was featured in a Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris in 2008. Dow had been married to Lauren Shulkind since 1980 and died in July 2022.

Dow’s struggles with the major depression in the 1990s became public knowledge. He eventually made a film series called “Beating the Blues” in which he discussed his depression and how he overcame it.
