How to use SFTP for Secure File Transfer in Your Organization?

If you want to transfer files using an SFTP program, you need to know how to operate it from the command line of your computer. You can retrieve it using a ‘get’ command. Simply type sftp> get remote file into the search box in the command line to begin. This will bring up the SFTP system and allow you to download a remote file to the computer. After it has been downloaded, the command center will prompt you for your next move. Now, you can retrieve it as a local file. This allows you to fully receive messages in an SFTP format.

Next, we want to make sure that we are sending files to our remote source of storage as safely as we can. To do this, we need to encrypt them using the same system. We start once again from the command line and we work our way around it, this time using the ‘put’ system. Type in sftp and then put local file, and the system will start the uploading process. If you want to copy over the whole thing, you need the put -r: command. This will allow you to copy what you need onto your operating systems and therefore into each file that you send. 

To come out of all of this and back to normal working order, type in the dollar sign and then write ‘exit.’ This should take you out of the command file. You can now try to send and receive information over the internet to see how your new files work. You should only have to go through this process a single time, or a second time to uninstall the information.
