Shadow and Bone is part of the Fantasy renaissance leading the charge at the box office recently. It is one of the finest series on Netflix as of now and one of the best fantasy series in general. Based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling novels, it tells the story of a girl named Alina Starkov who happens to be the most powerful magic-worker in the world and must engage in a game of dice with her nemesis to help the world. Season 2 arrived early this year to rave reviews but fans are waiting eagerly for season 3 now. Let us discuss all that we know so far.
Still in Hiatus
As of now the show still remains in hiatus and we have not a lot of information about it. There was also a spinoff based on the Six of Crows that Netflix has ordered but we do not know if it is still going into production. Both the books are incredibly popular with young adults and people seem to not get enough of it. Season 3 has not been greenlit by the makers yet and they are still sitting on it.
Netflix uses certain metrics to measure the success of a show and then goes ahead with the renewal or continuation of the series. Shadow and Bone indeed has a lot of popularity among the fans of the genre but a proper word will be available only after they determine the amount of profit another season will bring. Meanwhile the SAG-AFTRA strikes are only affecting the work even more as many shows have lost their writers currently and are yet to search for new ones in the meantime. Truth to be told nobody knows where the industry is headed to.

Sophie Holland, who is casting director for the entire series, had a lot of positive comments to make. About how the show has progressed and how it is going so far. She hopes fervently for a fresh cast and how they are all keeping their fingers crossed for a renewal of Shadow and Bone. Another spokesperson said that the show will definitely go on for a very long amount of time and they are going to stretch it as far as humanly possible. What remains to be seen is if Netflix cares enough for its most profitable ventures.
Where Can We Watch It?
Even if the third season is still in the pipeline. One can watch the last two seasons on Netflix as they are available on that platform. All episodes are very well-crafted. And fans of the books will have no trouble recognising some of the most iconic characters immediately. Alina Starkov and her friend Mal are the two headstrong protagonists. Who race against time to find a way to stop the Darkling and eradicate the Fold from existence. There are some scenes which are full of gore so children are advised not to watch the series.
What To Expect?
One of the biggest quandaries is what exactly can we expect from the series in the third season. We did get to see the Darkling’s death at the hands of the very girl he sought to use. But once again, the series split up the main characters and introduced a very new darkness to the world. Let us see how the heroes rise to this new threat and find a way to restore balance in the universe of the books once again.
Eric Heisserer has confirmed that we will also get to see a Six of Crows spinoff sooner rather than later. But these are just rumours for the time being and we do not know anything for certain. The book became an instant hit. Because of its formula of blending heist drama with fantasy and its colourful cast of characters. We have love and betrayal, dark pasts, conflicts between the main characters. Besides many other things going on in the book. If they finally decide to make the series we would rather it took some time. Than flounder off in the wrong direction.
