Sheila received awards from Columbia University for her work in community organizations and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Lincoln University. She then began her career in politics. Sheila Oliver started her political career in 2003, running for General Assembly in a primary election. In 2010, she became the 169th Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly, making her the first Black woman to hold that position. Also, she served as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs from 2018 to 2023. Furthermore, she was also selected as the running mate of Democrat Phil Murphy.
