Will Smith Movies

Here is a list of some of the best and worst Will Smith movies in the history of the actor’s career. The actor is a fine practitioner of cinema. Most of his roles are iconic, and he takes great care to bring them all to life. From I Am Legend to Aladdin, we all grew up watching one Will Smith movie or the other. Also, perhaps this list will help you find some gems that you miss. So without much further ado, let us discuss the rankings of popular Will Smith movies.

Bright

IMDb: 6.3/10

Bright

Bright, a Netflix action movie, has an original premise with mythical creatures in our world. However, the dialogue and plot make it nearly unwatchable. Will portrays a grumpy cop partnering with an orc-cop, but the character falls short. It’s proof that even beloved comedians can’t save a bad story. But the movie is worth a watch anyway. The fantasy atmosphere is incredibly well-made.

After Earth

IMDb: 4.8/10

After Earth

Will probably regrets doing the movie After Earth. Despite his and his son Jaden’s effort and chemistry, the space adventure falls flat despite impressive visual effects. The special effects are really good, and monsters look like they would jump out of the screen. But the movie still remains dry and very shallow. There simply is not much you can do to enjoy it. Perhaps except sit through it because of Will Smith’s performance.

The Legend of Bagger Vance

IMDb: 6.7/10

The Legend of Bagger Vance

Will plays a forgettable supporting role in a golf drama, helping Matt Damon’s character improve his golf skills and find life’s meaning. Despite their efforts, Bagger Vance sinks with clichés. This is one common mistake that you will often find in Will Smith’s movies. He does a lot of movies that are really good, but a whole lot of other movies which are cliched. However, both kinds of movies merit a watch simply because of his exceptional acting and dialogue delivery. But we get it, it can become grating after a certain while.

Hancock

IMDb: 6.4/10

Hancock

In his first superhero role, Will’s potential doesn’t soar as expected. Hancock, a story about a destructive superhero, had good intentions but failed to revive the genre. Over-the-top writing and weak action scenes bring down Will’s talent. Having said that, we know many people who actively enjoyed Hancock simply because of its hilarity. Perhaps you should also give it a try. Who knows what you will find?

Wild Wild West

IMDb: 6.4/10

Wild Wild West

In this rare period drama and Western, Will proves he can handle the genre. Unfortunately, the forgettable screenplay makes it dull, despite the cast’s efforts. It’s a kitschy take on the Western, suitable for casual viewing, but you might find yourself dozing off during most of it. Having said that, you can still give it a watch because of Will Smith’s acting. He handles the Western drama like a charm. Maybe you will even grow to like it.

Aladdin

IMDb: 6.9/10

Aladdin

Recreating Robin Williams’s legendary role as the Genie was impossible, but Will doesn’t even attempt it. He puts his own spin on the character, making him likable in a different way. Will Smith brings some enjoyable singing moments to the role, adding to the fun of the movie. Also, Robin Williams left some pretty big shoes to fill. Will Smith is up for it, but he still stumbles a lot in his portrayal of the now famous character. Only his witty persona and willingness to be comical most of the time save his life.

Collateral Beauty

IMDb: 6.8/10

Collateral Beauty

Will portrays an advertising executive seeking life’s purpose after a significant loss. The film aims for emotional depth but falls short with heavy-handed pathos and overly simplistic dialogue reminiscent of a predictable Christmas movie. Also, you can watch it for the feels. Though we do not recommend an overtly serious watch with your family. All of you will get bored in the end.

Seven Pounds

IMDb: 7.6/10

Seven Pounds

Will portrays a remorseful man attempting to seek redemption after causing the accidental death of seven individuals, including his fiancé. While we appreciate Will’s venture into darker roles, the deliberately gloomy dialogue lacks a meaningful message, resulting in a predominantly saddening and unfulfilling narrative. It is indeed a wonderful movie, and critics praised Smith’s performance of a griefstruck man. But watch it only if you are sure about it.

I, Robot

IMDb: 7.1/10

I, Robot

We enjoy seeing Will in comedic or sarcastic roles, but he excels as an enraged cop fighting against a robot uprising. While this sci-fi thriller may not deliver the intended existential depth, Will’s intense performance and impressive visual effects (considering it was made in 2004) make it a worthwhile choice for a Saturday night movie. As far as science fiction movies are concerned, I, Robot makes a stunning assortment of sights and sounds.

Concussion

IMDb: 7.1/10

Concussion

Once again, Will showcases his talent beyond looks, delivering a powerful performance in this football drama based on true events. He portrays a doctor advocating for awareness of head traumas’ impact on players. While some facts are outdated, Will’s compelling acting earned him a Golden Globe nomination. A notable watch. You can watch this movie for its incredible portrayals and dialogue delivery. One of the best Will Smith performances.

Suicide Squad

IMDb: 5.9/10

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad had major problems (let’s be honest, it was a disaster), but the cast’s charisma occasionally impressed. Will’s portrayal of Deadshot, a pragmatic and confident character, outshines the lackluster screenwriting. His contribution saves the messy plot from complete failure, leaving us wanting to see him in more superhero or villain roles. There you have it. Another brilliant save by Will Smith. Honestly, I even watched the movie specifically because of his portrayal of Deadshot. Even though Idris Elba plays Bloodsport much better than Deadshot in the more successful movie.

Focus

IMDb: 6.6/10

Focus

In this crime-turned-romance film, Will portrays a con artist who reconnects with his ex-apprentice and former flame (Margot Robbie), putting his new plan at risk. The film’s upbeat comedy is enjoyable, but it’s the undeniable chemistry between Will and Margot that truly sets it apart. Also, you will enjoy it for the laughs.

Gemini Man

IMDb: 5.7/10

Gemini Man

In this thrilling movie, Will takes on the dual role of an elite assassin targeted by his younger clone. While the CGI has its moments, Will’s performance convincingly portrays two distinct characters. With impressive stunts and Smith’s evident passion for the story, this film is a fun watch. Will Smith on Will Smith action is something we never realized we needed. The movie is incredibly well-made for such a poorly received one at that.

Bad Boys

IMDb: 6.9/10

Bad Boys

Will Smith’s Hollywood debut, a blockbuster action-comedy, remains one of the best ’90s movies. He excels as the smooth and badass detective Mike Lowrey, and his chemistry with Martin Lawrence is unforgettable. It’s a recipe for an almost flawless movie that still captivates audiences today. Also, it is one of his better works. You will love it.

Independence Day

IMDb: 7.0/10

Independence Day

Will Smith’s Hollywood debut, a blockbuster action-comedy, remains one of the best ’90s movies. He excels as the smooth and badass detective Mike Lowrey, and his chemistry with Martin Lawrence is unforgettable. It’s a recipe for an almost flawless movie that still captivates audiences today. Watch it for the sheer action scenes.

I Am Legend

IMDb: 7.2/10

I Am Legend

In this intense thriller, Will portrays the sole survivor in a post-apocalyptic New York infested with zombies. With his loyal German Shepherd by his side, he embarks on a mission to save humanity. This outstanding movie excels in every aspect, but it’s Will Smith’s powerful performance as a solitary hero that elevates it to the second spot on his best films list.
