Losing in the T20 World Cup semi-finals on the back of a 4-1 hammering by old rivals Australia in the Ashes, it’s been far from the ideal start to 2026 for England’s cricket stars.
With pressure mounting on head coach Brendon McCullum, work is going on behind the scenes to try to turn England’s fortunes around in all formats of the game.
A Tough Time for English Cricket
England knew they were going to be up against it when they headed to Australia for the 2025/26 Ashes, but few expected the Test series to be so one-sided. England, who are +140 in cricket bets to win the next Ashes in 2027, started on the wrong foot with an eight-wicket defeat in the first Test in Perth. Australia, who are +100 with cricket tips to retain the Ashes next year, never really looked back after that opener at Optus Stadium. Going on to win the second Test in Brisbane by eight wickets again and the third Test in Adelaide by 82 runs, England simply couldn’t turn the tide.
A fourth Test victory for England was somewhat of a reprieve at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as the tourists’ bowlers limited the Baggy Greens to 152 and 132 in their two innings. But with Australia having already won the series at that stage, the damage for McCullum’s men had already been done. Australia wrapped up the series in style with a five-wicket victory in Sydney, and England’s players made the long trip home with their tails between their legs.
McCullum Trusted to Turn the Ship Around
Reports have suggested the England and Wales Cricket Board will stick with McCullum and director of cricket Rob Key, with the hope that consistency in the management team will bring about more positive results in the future. There were questions regarding the pair’s future, especially after England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to India in the T20 tournament. McCullum has since come out and defended his team’s approach to the recent Ashes and T20 World Cup and believes the work is being done to try to achieve great things.
With a contract with the ECB until the end of the next 50-over World Cup in the autumn of 2027, McCullum has talked up players who can be the key to future success for England. Highlighting the likes of Harry Brook and Will Jacks, who are both aged 27, McCullum feels these stars can be the backbone of a side that can go on to win silverware.
Judging by the last Ashes in Australia, there is plenty of work to be done if England are to be competitive when the Baggy Greens make the trip to the UK in 2027. However, with consistency in the management team and the next generation of players ready to make the step up into key senior roles, England fans will be hoping their team can get back to winning ways on the biggest stages in the different formats of the game in the near future.
