Miss Mexico Andrea Meza Wins Miss Universe 2020

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Miss Universe 2020 got postponed and happened on ay 16, 2021. The Miss Universe 2020 is the 69th edition of the actual competition. The competition was held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. It is in the Florida, United States. Miss Andrea Meza from Mexico won the Miss Universe 2020 title. Zozibini Tunzi from South Africa was crowned the winner at the event’s end.

Who is Miss Andrea Meza?

Andrea Meza is from Mexico. She is the third Mexican woman to win the Miss Universe title. She has sound knowledge about gender disparities and gender violence. Miss Andrea is vocal about these problems.

Andrea was born on 13th August 1994. Her birthplace is Chihuahua city. As of now, she is 26 years old. Her full name is Alma Andrea Meza Carmona. She is a Mexican model and software engineer by profession. She has two younger sisters. Her ethnicity is Chinese & Mexican. 

She completed her schooling in a secondary school. Andrea studied Software Engineering at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua. She completed her degree in 2017. She is working as a Software Engineer. In addition to this job, she is a model.

Miss Universe 2020 Pageant:

In 2020, Andrea represents the Mexicana Universal Chihuahua, as she crowned the Miss Universe title. Mario Lopez and Olivia Culpo hosted the pageant. Lopez hosted the Miss Universe 2007 and Culpo is the title winner of Miss Universe 2012.

It was the third time in the history of the competition that the program held after the calendar end. The competition was planned for 2020. But due to Covid-19 Pandemic, the competition happened in the next year of 2020. 

Miss Universe pageant involves several competitions in which Meza won six challenges. One of the challenges that she won is the sports challenge. The final challenge happened on November 29, 2020, in Queretaro City. 

At first, Andrea moved to the top fifteen of the competition. Then she advanced to the top ten members of the competition. Finally, she became one of the top five competitors. The other four finalists are

  • Janick Maceta – 2nd Runner-Up
  • Adline Castelino – 3rd Runner-Up
  • Kimberly Jimenez – 4th Runner-Up

The above finalists are from Brazil, Peru, India, and the Dominican Republic respectively. 

Selection of Participants:

The competition allowed to participate the contestants from 74 countries and territories. Before the Covid-19 Pandemic, seven contestants are selected. The competition canceled several events and programs due to the Pandemic. In this competition, 28 of the representatives are appointed based on national titles.

On May 14, 2021, the 74 contestants competed in several competitions. The competitions went on the next day too. Based on a closed-door interview, 21 semifinalists are selected. 

The top 21 semifinalists competed in swimsuits to narrow down to the top ten contestants. The top ten contestants competed in an evening gown. This shortlisted five contestants for in final competition. The final competition is the question and closing statement. Based on the speaking rounds, the pageant will choose the winner.

Miss Mexico Andrea Meza Wins Miss Universe 2020:

Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi is the person who presented the crown to Miss Universe Andrea Meza. Andrea impressed the judges with her bold and witty answers. 

The judges asked Andrea about she would have handled the Coronavirus Pandemic. Andrea said that “I believe there is not a perfect way to handle this Covid-10”. She also said, “However, I believe what I would have done is to create the lockdown even before that everything was that big as we lost many lives which we can’t afford that. We have to take care of our people.” 

The judges asked Andrea about the changing beauty standards. She replied that “We live in a society that more and more is more than advanced, and as we advance as a society, we’ve also advanced with stereotypes. Nowadays, beauty isn’t only the way we look. For me, beauty radiates not only in our spirit but in our hearts and the way that we conduct ourselves. Never permit anyone to tell you that you’re not valuable.”

All her statements impressed the judges and this is the reason to choose her as a winner. 

Andrea is the official Tourism Brand Ambassador for Chihuahua. This is to promote the best tourist attractions of Mexico. Meza is also an activist who works on women’s rights and inclusion. She currently works with the Municipal Institute for Women. This is to end the issue ‘Gender Violence”.

Andrea Meza is a make-up artist certified by the authority. She loves to practice CrossFit. Meza also loves other sports like sand-boarding and rappel.
